In a field often clouded by misconceptions and unrealistic expectations, he serves as a voice of education and honesty, guiding his patients through the intricate landscape of modern aesthetics with an expert touch and a commitment to natural-looking results.
During our conversation, Dr. Sagar Gujjar’s enthusiasm is infectious. He illuminates the intricate dance between advanced technology and personalized care, revealing how each consultation is a chance to curate a skincare journey uniquely suited to the individual. The focus here is on quality—he sees a limited number of clients each day, ensuring that each interaction is meaningful and tailored. His team is his first priority, and he doesn’t shy away from dropping the often truth-bomb on his patients.
In an exclusive interview with GlobalSpa, Dr. Sagar Gujjar discusses his innovative skincare philosophy and explores the exciting developments shaping the future of dermatology in our country.
What initially drew you to specialize in dermatology?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: During my internship at Nashik Medical College, I became fascinated by dermatology's focus on anti-aging and skincare, areas I felt were lacking in India. I completed my MD in Dermatology in 2019 and, during those three years, presented at international conferences to learn about advanced technologies abroad. My interest in energy-based devices, particularly in anti-aging, guided me to choose dermatology. After completing fellowships abroad, I started my practice in Mumbai, and it's been over three to four years now—things are going great.
Many dermatologists have a specific philosophy or approach to skincare. What would you say is your skincare philosophy?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: My skincare philosophy depends on the individual client because everyone’s skin is different. The basic idea is to cleanse and provide enough protection to delay the signs of aging. I focus a lot on anti-aging skincare regimen, where active ingredients are needed, and maintenance therapy when necessary. The selection of products varies with age. For more mature skin, hydrating products become important. We need in-clinic treatments to maintain skin elasticity, reduce signs of sun damage, and enhance skin tightening. Non-invasive procedures can help reduce wrinkles and improve elasticity.
These days, the 10-step skincare routine has become popular. Where do you stand on that?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: Your skin can absorb only two active ingredients at a time, so a 10-step routine may be overkill. The first steps like cleansing and toning just prepare the skin. After that, you apply products like serums based on your skin type. For anti-aging, ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide are common. Sunscreen is vital for protection, although it’s not absorbed. At night, a similar routine applies: cleanse, tone, and apply serums followed by active ingredients.
What are your thoughts on the tiny treatments young people have been getting, like fillers or Botox?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: Non-surgical, minimally invasive treatments like fillers and Botox are great options, especially before events, due to minimal downtime. Botox is commonly considered after age 25 to relax muscles and prevent fine lines, with no side effects when done safely. Fillers require precision; too much can lead to unnatural results. I always ensure patients have realistic expectations. We also offer treatments like Hydrafacial MD and vegan facials that involve microdermabrasion and skin tightening.
What sets Skinwood apart from other dermatology clinics?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: When I started the clinic, my goal was to offer something unique that wasn’t available in the market—something first of its kind in India. The dermatology field is very much a service-based category, so I asked myself, "What would I want as a patient?" I would want luxury, personalized attention, and a welcoming experience. So, we focus on dedicated appointments and a dedicated team. The quality of the staff is crucial, which is why the team is the first priority.
All our equipment is USFDA-approved, ensuring high standards. In 2023, I introduced the Emerald Laser for non-surgical fat reduction—the first of its kind in India. We’ve also added the Emsculpt Neo for body contouring and the AdvaTx Yellow Laser for pigmentation and acne. Additionally, we brought back Obagi Medical Products to India, offering medical-grade skincare with visible results.
What are some common misconceptions people have about these treatments when they come into your office?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: There are many misconceptions. For instance, some patients expect a facelift in just one session and say they don’t want to return every two or three weeks. Dedication is required. It often takes multiple sessions and a combination of techniques to achieve effective results. Another misconception is about body contouring; many come expecting one session to remove all their fat. I make sure to clarify expectations.
Another big misconception is about Botox and fillers. In India, many people don’t know the difference between the two. Fillers are about facial contouring and enhancing the shape, while Botox relaxes the muscles to temporarily reduce wrinkles. Fillers don’t drastically change your appearance, and the results depend on how much is used, where it’s applied, and other factors. Botox is also reversible. Your skin already contains hyaluronic acid, and we inject a human-made version of it. So, there are all these misconceptions that we’re focused on addressing. Patient education plays a huge part in our work.
I noticed on your website that you offer vaginal rejuvenation, which is still quite rare in India. Can you tell me more about that?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: Yes, vaginal rejuvenation is emerging in India, and we’re about five or ten years ahead in offering it. It’s a combination of techniques, including laser hair reduction around the vaginal area and vaginal-area chemical peels.Vaginal rejuvenation itself isn’t new, but the way we approach it is a combination of multiple techniques. First, we offer laser hair reduction around the vaginal area. Many people get full-body hair removal but shy away from treating private areas, which shouldn’t be the case. We also provide vaginal-area chemical peels to safely lighten the skin, particularly for genetically darker areas, making them more aesthetically pleasing.
We’ve also introduced treatments like vaginal facials, which can be performed on the buttocks or other body areas. For inside the vaginal area, we focus on improving elasticity, especially after sexual activity, using radio-frequency skin-tightening devices like Forma V or Votiva V. These non-surgical techniques use a mild heat sensation that most people hardly notice. Typically, treatments are done every two weeks for about three to six sessions, depending on the individual. The acceptance of these treatments is increasing, and we are among the few clinics in Mumbai to offer them.
How do you see dermatology and aesthetics evolving in India?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: After COVID, and with Instagram becoming so active, people are much more aware of what's happening globally. They see treatments available in other countries and search for them here in India. The beauty and dermatology field in India is evolving, but it’s a slower process. However, in the coming years, I foresee significant changes. We're already on an upward incline, with new technologies emerging all the time. I frequently attend international conferences and visit manufacturers to learn about new devices and innovations. For example, I’ll be in Copenhagen next month for more technological updates. So yes, you can expect a lot of advancement in the next five years.
As these treatments become more mainstream, do you think dermatology will become more accessible?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: It's a complex question, but I’ll try to simplify it. There are many clinics and service providers, and every doctor and patient is different. The right service provider makes a big difference in the quality of care. Let’s take an example: if you’re driving a Rolls-Royce, you’ll have a specific level of service and clientele because it’s a luxury item. If you’re opting for something more affordable, the service will differ because the investment is lower, and so are the resources. So while there may be more accessible options in the future, the quality of service will always vary based on the level of investment in both technology and training.
If you had to define beauty in one word, what would beauty mean to you?
Dr. Sagar Gujjar: Beauty, to me, is happiness. It’s acceptance and confidence. To feel more confident, sometimes you need a little something—changes to your face, hair, or nails. There are many definitions of beauty, but for me, it’s about maintaining what makes you feel good, just like you maintain your hair. Aging is natural, but aging gracefully is a form of beauty in itself.
