Empowering India's Future: The Rise of the Beauty & Wellness Sector

The Beauty & Wellness sector in India is undergoing a remarkable transformation. With a focus on inclusivity, empowerment, and growth, this industry is not only providing livelihood opportunities but also fostering entrepreneurship among the country's diverse and marginalised populations. At the heart of this movement is the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council (B&WSSC), which recently celebrated its 3rd Annual Convocation Ceremony, marking significant achievements and setting ambitious goals for the future.

The 3rd Annual Convocation Ceremony of the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council (B&WSSC) was a testament to the sector's dedication to empowerment and inclusivity. Held at the India Habitat Centre, the event saw 270 candidates receive a certification under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0 and various CSR projects under Skill India. Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), graced the occasion and congratulated the candidates for their resilience and commitment.

Inclusive Growth and Empowerment

The highlight of the ceremony was the certification of individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community and acid attack survivors. This move underscores the B&WSSC's commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive skill ecosystem. Minister Chaudhary’s interaction with these candidates highlighted the transformative impact of skill development on marginalised groups, showcasing the council's efforts to foster an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. The convocation ceremony was also marked by the launch of the B&WSSC’s Coffee-Table Book, “Lakshaya-Transformative Tales of Empowerment,” which chronicles the inspiring journeys of those who have been transformed by the council’s initiatives.

Aligning with the National Vision

Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India the Skill Capital of the World, the B&WSSC offers a variety of National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF)-aligned courses under the Skill India Mission. These courses not only provide livelihood opportunities but also promote entrepreneurship. The council collaborates with state governments to extend these initiatives pertaining to underprivileged and marginalised communities, including widows, prison inmates, school dropouts, acid attack survivors, and transgender individuals.

Minister Jayant Chaudhary’s speech emphasised the sector’s potential, stating, “The global beauty and wellness sector is a promising sunrise industry, and India has notably outpaced global growth in this sector. Over the past nine years, the B&WSSC has achieved remarkable milestones, creating 106 job roles focusing strongly on women's empowerment and entrepreneurship. Today, our graduates exemplify immense resilience and determination, transforming themselves into leaders within this vibrant industry.”

Under the flagship PMKVY scheme, the B&WSSC has trained 4.89 lakh individuals, certifying 1.34 lakh under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and 2.54 lakh under Short Term Training (STT) and Special Projects (SPL), achieving a commendable 49% placement rate. Top job roles include Yoga Instructor, Yoga Trainer, Assistant Beauty Therapist, Pedicurist & Manicurist, and Beauty Therapist.

A Sector of Growth and Inclusivity

The Beauty & Wellness sector is witnessing a robust Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18.2% between 2018 and 2022, surpassing the global CAGR of 17.6%. According to a 2023 skill gap study by KPMG, the sector is poised to grow to approximately INR 277,000 crores by 2025 and is anticipated to reach INR 500,000 crores by 2030.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this industry is its inclusivity and empowerment, with women constituting about 66% of the workforce—a figure expected to rise to 70% by 2030. This sector is becoming increasingly gender neutral, providing equal opportunities for all, supported by government and private sector initiatives promoting skill development across the country.

As India strides towards a future of inclusive growth and empowerment, the Beauty & Wellness sector stands out as a beacon of hope and opportunity, showcasing the nation’s commitment to skill development and entrepreneurship.
