5 Easy Ways to Clean Holi Colors Without Harming Skin & Hair

Having second thoughts about playing Holi because of the immense cleaning required afterwards? Understandably, given the harmful chemicals which are present in the colors and the havoc they create on our skin & hair. Megha Asher, COO, and Co-Founder Juicy Chemistry gives you some tips on how you can get back your clear and healthy skin and hair after making the most of this festival of colours.

On the face:

1.) Use a cleansing balm to gently break down the colours on the face and then follow up with your normal cleanser. You can then follow up with rosewater to soothe the skin.

2.) If a cleansing balm is not available, you can also use a non-comedogenic carrier oil to remove the colours.

3.) You can also opt for a quick and easy Multani Mitti and rosewater face mask to help get rid of any residual colour. Make a smooth paste of the two ingredients and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. You can also add in coconut milk.

4.) Follow up with a face oil at the end to lock in the moisture and nourish your skin.

It is also important that you apply a face oil or a non-comedogenic carrier oil prior to playing Holi. This ensures you’re able to remove the colours easily, later on.

On the body:

1.) Colour-stained nails are an absolute menace but here’s a quick and easy solution – soak your nail in a mixture of vinegar and lukewarm water for around half an hour. Repeat this process if necessary. You can also apply amchur to your nails and gently scrub them with an old toothbrush.

2.) Use a carrier oil of your choosing to first melt away the colours on your body. Then follow up with a body wash or cold-pressed soap. You can use a mitt or other natural accessory to gently scrub the skin. Be sure to apply a body butter or body oil afterwards to nourish your skin. Apply to slightly damp skin for better absorption.

Prior to playing Holi, be sure to apply a carrier oil to exposed parts of the body to protect them and make the removal of colours a lot easier.

On the hair:

1.) Apply hair oil, hair mask, or carrier oil to the hair and scalp after playing Holi. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes and then shampoo your hair.

2.) You can also opt for DIY treatments and apply coconut milk or yoghurt instead. This helps break down the colours better.

Prepping before Holi is also important. Make sure to apply a hair oil, carrier oil, or a hair mask prior to playing Holi. This protects your hair from damage and also ensures easy removal of colours.
