Did You Know Banana Is A Berry And Strawberry Isn’t?

Bananas, Grapes, Avocados, and Eggplants, are all considered as berries but not strawberries! I think it is time we brush up with our definitions for fruits and berries.

The popular trivia of Tomatoes being a fruit or vegetable has been done and dusted. What really intrigues us is how a Banana is a berry and Strawberries are not. Botanically speaking, a fruit is defined as the portion of a flowering plant that develops from the ovary. To classify it as a berry, it should tick the following boxes-

  1. Berry has three layers- outer skin (exocarp), fleshy middle (mesocarp), and inner part which holds seeds (endocarp)
  2. The fruit must have two or more seeds
  3. The fruit must develop from one flower that has one ovary

Bananas fulfill all of these requirements. They develop from a flower containing one single ovary, have soft skin and a fleshy middle. Moreover, bananas contain several seeds that we don’t notice as they’re small. Tomatoes, peppers, cranberries, eggplants, and kiwis come from a flower with one ovary, and so are also berries.

Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries botanically, are not considered as berries. They develop from flowers with multiple ovaries. That remains the only difference.

But while we are at Bananas, here are some nutritious facts about this fruit-
