Reduce your footprint all around the world.
Green tourism, eco-tourism, responsible tourism – whatever may we call it, the world is beginning to move towards this environment friendly notion.
Be it beaches or the banks, hotels, resorts and camps, or trekking mountains and exploring underwater – each aspect of tourism is now segmented towards creating an experience as sustainable and green as possible.
Fun and eco-friendly, here are the top sustainable destinations rising around the world you need to visit for your next trip:
Monaco
With their ongoing campaign “Green is the new glam”, the principality serves out the perfect eco-experience. Gastronomy in Monaco is dominated by local produce and seasonality. The four-star luxury, Hotel Fairmont Monte-Carlo works on a daily basis to conserve resources, optimize energy management, minimize water consumption and boost recycling with its four heating pumps, which generate energy and Monaco Bike Tours takes you to a tour of the city on an electric bicycle! Preserving and admiring the natural landscape of the country is another bonus to this eco-friendly journey.
Sri Lanka
An ultimate in diversity, culture, and nature – Sri Lanka stances number one in promoting sustainability in its tourism. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has been working with the tourism industry to perfect its sustainable travelling in the country, including ongoing projects such as the Eco Lodge in the Sinharaja Rainforest and the constant development of Sigiraya – the country’s cultural and heritage icon. Sri Lanka’s first luxury electric supercar named “Vega” will also be introduced this year, in April.
Israel
Whether it is about staying in a converted eco-bus, being an eco-volunteer or enjoying a technology free, organic B&B offering alternative therapies, Israel is fast taking on the green tourism notion. One can now stay in eco-friendly tents like the Bedouin or Cabins in the Mist which are hand-built and tech-free wooden cabins. Many hotels have caught on as well such as the Kibbutz Hotel in Lavi introducing in-house nature preservation, recycling, energy saving measures and environment-friendly systems.
Bhutan
The South Asian beauty is currently amongst the most sustainable and eco-friendly destinations in the world. Tourism in Bhutan thrives on the principle of sustainability, introducing trekking policies like making campfires in trekking camps, using only detergent free soaps, discouraging leaving behind scraps to not attract the wild animals. All visitors to Bhutan are required to book through a registered/sustainable tour operator for their visit to Bhutan.
Chile
According to a study in 2012, Chile topped the list leading in sustainability. The biggest reason behind this sector flourishing in Chile is the government’s understanding and support of eco-tourism. Bird Chile Nature Tours introduced birding tours throughout the whole country with a leave no trail behind policy. Chile’s first luxury eco-camp Patagonia Camp treats wastewater, composts foods waste in its in-house herb garden while many other hotels have also followed suit.
Malta
Malta is renowned for its rich heritage and stunning islands, one named Gozo being the most popular for its clean waters and eco-Gozo 2020 strategy planned a decade ago. Today, Gozo is amongst the greenest destinations with most of the local food and dishes being 100% organic along with policies preserving its architectural heritage and supporting the local communities residing in the country.
