Breaking the Myths: Understanding IVF with Facts, Not Fear

An expert-led guide on the realities couples need to know about the treatment

For couples navigating the complex journey of infertility, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) can feel like both a beacon of hope and a source of uncertainty. Despite its widespread use and remarkable success stories, IVF is often shrouded in myths and misconceptions that can create unnecessary anxiety and hesitation. To help clear the air, Dr. Rohan Palshetkar, Head of Unit at Bloom IVF and a seasoned expert in reproductive medicine, dives into some of the most common myths surrounding IVF.

Myth 1: IVF is Always Successful on the First Attempt

Although, as IVF specialists, we hope that every patient gets pregnant in their first attempt, it may not be so. As age increases, the chances of success do reduce and the number of attempts to achieve a pregnancy may increase. But also remember that if 1 IVF cycle fails, it doesn’t mean that the next one will as well. Besides age, quality of oocytes, quality of sperm, and uterine lining all play a role in success. So, if they aren’t ideal, sometimes more than one attempt may be required.

Myth 2: IVF means twins

Well, yes and no. IVF is associated with more twin pregnancies but if you are adamant about the fact that you want a single baby, it can be achieved. In fact, these days, as IVF specialists, we prefer to do single embryo transfer so that you can have a single healthy pregnancy through the entire process. Even when multiple embryos are transferred, the chance of twin pregnancy is 10-15%.

Myth 3: IVF is Only for the Wealthy

Although IVF can be expensive, it is becoming more accessible. Because of advances in the field and widespread availability, it is affordable in many places. But yes, if you require more technologies and techniques to achieve a pregnancy, it can be a bit expensive. In fact, now many companies are offering insurance coverage or reimbursement for the IVF process

Myth 4: IVF Babies Are Not as Healthy as Natural Babies

There is no evidence to suggest that IVF babies are any less healthy than those conceived naturally. IVF has been practiced for over four decades, and millions of healthy children have been born using this technology. Remember, they are your sperm and your eggs, so they are going to be as healthy as your genes are!

Myth 5: IVF is the Only Solution for Infertility

IVF is one of many options available for treating infertility. Other treatments, such as ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and lifestyle modifications, may be effective depending on the cause of infertility. IVF is generally recommended for specific conditions like blocked fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility after other treatments have failed.

Myth 6: IVF is Painful and Emotionally Draining

Reality: IVF involves procedures like hormone injections, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer, but these are performed with minimal discomfort. Most women find the process manageable with the support of their healthcare team. While the emotional aspects of infertility can be challenging, counselling, support groups, and open communication with loved ones can help couples navigate the process.
