Oils in the world of beauty are rated according to their comedogenic profile. Comedogenic profile means how likely the application of an oil is going to cause “comedones” or in other words clog your pores & cause acne.
The comedogenic scale of oil ranges from 0 to 5. Oils or butters that are scaled at ‘0’ are non-comedogenic i.e. wont clog your pores at all. 1-2 are low comedogenic oils, meaning they’re unlikely to clog pores & oils in the range of 3-5 are likely & highly likely to cause break outs.
A few years ago, people having oily or acne prone skin avoided formulations with oils at all cost. But this belief is changing now. After a lot of research done in the beauty industry, we have now come to realize that oils that are low on the comedogenic scale can actually help soothe acne prone angry skin & also help manage the production of sebum, thereby controlling the “oiliness” of the skin. One example of such an oil is the jojoba oil which tricks the skin into thinking it has produced enough sebum & thereby helps control its production.
A few oils that are low on the comedogenic scale and are great for oily skin type are rosehip oil, pomegranate seed oil, jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, tamanu oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil etc. These are all light dry oils & do not feel extremely heavy on the skin.
A great DIY facial oil recipe that you can make at home is blending a few of these oils together. I usually use an oil with the following blends:
1) Jojoba
2) Pomegranate seed oil
3) Cucumber seed oil
4) Evening primrose oil
5) Rosehip seed oil
6) I also add in a few drops of turmeric essential oil & tea tree oil in it
I use our Rose water or glow up toner on my face before the oil & then proceed to apply the oil on damp skin. I find that this method of application & recipe helps hydrate my skin & keeps acne at bay even during the dry winter months!
Do try my DIY recipe if you too are suffering from acne, oily skin. And for those with dry skin type. I promise you it will help hydrate & nourish your skin & feel like a warm hug!
